Leslie Shaw Zadoian

Leslie Shaw Zadoian, b. 1941, received her BA and MA from Queens College, City University of New York, and studied at The Art Students League of New York. She worked as a graphic designer and editor in publishing and in higher education, her fine art practice restricted to occasional paintings and a residency in Rome and Pompei, until she eventually left the world of “real jobs” to make fine art full time.

Zadoian begins with the simple act of looking and examination of the world around her, contemplating color, shape, texture, space, and their relationships as they appear in daily life. Thoughts and observations recede, percolate and, bring forth a color, texture or other element which is the genesis of a work. The first element then suggests a second and a third, and so on. Inspired by nature, art, discarded objects, and the inner journey, her works transform disparate elements and integrate them into a new universe. Zadoian often works with collage and assemblages of metal and wood attached to the canvas over a base of translucent depth of layered traditional materials such as acrylics and pastels. Shape, line, color, texture and space interact, often defying containment and extending beyond the edge of the canvas,  creating a beauty and unlikely elegance in the combinations of materials. The textures, energy and space, which are sensed rather than seen alluded to mystery, spirit, and the layered nature of existence.

She has participated in many shows in New York and nationally, and has works in private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
