Jean Promutico

Jean Promutico was born in the 1930s to Italian immigrants, and was raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She obtained her BFA, magna cum laude, from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA, and an MA from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in 1968.

In this later phase of her career, she is no longer committed to a strict viewpoint. She has embraced an openness to visual expression within her long-term commitment to the process of making art, as well as to the materials that are available for 2-dimensional images, and to whatever attracts her interest within these parameters of presentation and creation. The resulting paintings are often textual and replete with subtle layers and dimension, with an entrancing quality beckoning the viewer to linger.

Promutico has exhibited extensively across the country and has received numerous awards and grants in recognition of her art, including an Individual Artist Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. She has work in many private and public collections, including The Fine Art Museum of New Mexico and the The Museum of Albuquerque.
