Barbara Isaacs

Barbara Isaacs, born and raised in New York City, is a painter, fashion illustrator, costume designer, and filmmaker. She has written, directed, produced and photographed short films, documentaries, and television commercials. She attended Bennington College, Vermont and earned her BFA from Parsons School of Design, New York City.

A Neo-Pop artist, Isaac reflects “intense investigation resulting in sophisticated amalgams" in her work by "transforming ubiquitous objects such as comic book icons, aggressive toys, apprehensive dolls, and the ever-present logos of pervading goods, into ironic symmetries."

Isaacs has exhibited in  numerous solo and group shows.  Her paintings are held in national and international collections including Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Nelson Rockefeller Collection, New York, NY;  Dieter Roth Collection, Basil, Switzerland;  Cranbrook Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  She has received many grants and other awards including those from:  Virginia Center for  Creative Arts;  Parsons School of Design;  United States Information Agency Young Filmmakers Program. Her film “The Knowledge Box” is currently being screened within the traveling  exhibition “Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia.”  The exhibit originated at Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and is now on display at the Cranbrook Museum. The exhibit will later be shown at the University of California Berkeley Art Museum. Stills from “The Knowledge Box” are featured in an extensive catalogue.
