John Whittaker

John Whittaker, b. 1950, has a BA from Harvard, and Ph.D. in experimental physics from Princeton, and began working with street photography in 1969. He has studied at the Art Students League, Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts, and worked as a staff photographer at community newspapers in Manhattan.

His photographs revolve around feelings of uneasiness about the nature of reality.  They have a sense of mystery, questioning what is really happening in the image; they seem to reflect a world in which the unexplainable is commonplace. Among his subjects, Whittaker is interested in billboards and the ways in which they reveal aspects of ourselves; particularly, the ways in which we interact with them in the visual density of the urban landscape.  The resulting photographs reflect the assumptions and expectations of social interaction in our culture.

Whittaker has shown in New Mexico and New York, and continues to take photographs. He currently resides in the storied Westbeth Artist community with his wife and fellow artist, Jean Promutico.
