Candy Le Sueur

Candy Le Sueur grew up in South Africa where she developed an attachment to the wide open spaces and big skies so typical of that country. She received a Fine Arts degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg , followed a career in advertising, exhibited extensively in South Africa and then moved to the Netherlands for three years and when she arrived in New York in 2004,  enrolled in the National Academy School to explore new methods of creating art and meet like minded people.

Candy’s approach to her oil paintings are to push her style of landscape inspired paintings to expressive abstraction. The first thing one notices about the work is the sheer effervescence. On closer observation, one sees multiple thin layers on the canvas onto which thicker applied paint overlaps, clashes against each other, accumulates and dissolves.  A play of gestural brushstrokes and mark making are committed to the canvas with wonder and vigor.

Her approach to the works on paper are slower paced. These are created using the traditional monotype process to print the images on fine Japanese paper. Then, by applying experimental techniques, the papers are carefully layered onto firmer printmaking paper as mixed media pieces. These are enhanced with colored pencil , silver leaf and watercolor. The fluid application of the printmaking ink creates delicate shades and gives a transparent quality to the work.

She has exhibited extensively in Jersey City and New York: most recently at the Carter Burden Gallery in NYC and previously at the Affordable Art Fair and Art Hamptons. In Jersey City : Panepinto Galleries ; the Novado Gallery, Drawing Rooms and the Jersey City Museum have shown her work. She is also represented by the Davis Gallery in Austin, Texas. Her paintings are featured in the Marriott Residence Inn and Canopy Hotel in Jersey City, as well as in Harborside Blvd, Weehawken and in many private collections.
