Helen Levin

Helen Levin, b. 1940, is a lifelong artist who holds the M.F.A. in Painting from Columbia University, and the B.F.A. in Painting from Hunter College. As a student of artists William Baziotes and Stephen Greene, Levin received an intense awareness of pictorial space and the aesthetics of abstract art. Helen also creates collages from her own hand painted papers.

The artist’s recent paintings are a love affair between the dynamics of pictorial space and contemporary architecture.  Working with acrylic on canvas and paper, she paints gesturally, to capture the sense of energy, movement, and light of architecture. During her more than five decades as a painter, Levin as been inspired by nature and the arts: dance, song, and the written word. She feels a spiritual connection to the artwork ofHofmann, de Kooning, Gorky, and Kandinsky, and to the writings of Greenberg, Rosenberg, Newman, Mondriaan, and Kandinsky.

With her paintings exhibited in over one hundred group shows, she has had recent solo exhibits at : The Staten Island Museum, Ceres Gallery, Mixt Media Gallery (Holland), and Espace Culturel ( Paribas Bank_Nice, France). Levin curated nine large group shows, including for Nabisco Brands and for Chubb Insurance galleries. In 2008 she received the Chenven Foundation Award for painting, and she has been the recipient of two exhibition grants from the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs.  Her artists books are in the Museum of Modern Art and Brooklyn Museum collections, and two of her large abstractions are in the Staten Island Museum.
